This weekend is why I built "extra" time into my schedule. Life happens.
The main thing left, which I planned for this weekend, is to clean out the refrigerators (yes, I have 2 - probably could get by without the 2nd, but it's really convenient!) and clean the kitchen floor. Yesterday, as mentioned in a previous post, was spent at a funeral. Today I don't know what will happen. My choice would be for Jimmy to go drain his boat and leave me with about 6 or 7 hours to myself ... I could really get the major stuff finished! On the other hand, my son left a message while we were gone yesterday wanting to know what we had in mind for the weekend (clearly did not bother to read the email I sent him about the funeral). I've not talked to him yet, so don't know what he wanted ... and how (if at all) it will effect today. And in addition, I need to take an extra weekend to go visit my parents. Mama is (temporarily I hope) in a nursing home; and my impression is that she's getting discouraged and depressed. She needs company and activities. Next weekend is supposed to be on the schedule to put up the outside decorations. I haven't finished making them yet, so it's looking like I will just make do with what's left from last year. If I go visit Mama, it'll be one more weekend until I get to the decorations; but still no time to work on new ones. My sewing is getting behind. I did finish one project. I have 2 others that need to be done that I only have a month to finish.
Too many things are piling up. I thought I had a good schedule, but it's looking like I just can't do the things I want done. And that's getting me very discouraged. See, the thing is, I can't really count on anyone to actually visit me. I used to have open houses ... but after the first year, very few people wanted to bother again. Clearly I'm not a good hostess. The last year, when I had just the couple (half of whom we buried yesterday) come on the Saturday, and one friend on the Sunday - who breezed through and grabbed some cookies to take to her hubby in the car, well, that's when I gave up trying. Many people had said they wanted to come see my decorations; but in fact, they didn't bother. So why does it matter to me to get them done? One of my goals was to use the first week in November (including first and second weekends) to decorate, because the third weekend has traditionally been for our friends to come have dinner and then go to Meadow Lights. Will that happen this year? Only if one of her children will bring her, my friend won't drive this far. I'll continue with my schedule anyway; I decorate because I enjoy it so much. I just hadn't realized before how much I want to be able to share my decorated house.
Well, I've spent quite enough time rambling, I need to go find something to do. It's not like I don't have anything! LOL!

Random Thoughts, September 2009
I've been doing well in terms of getting my house cleaned and decluttered before October. I've been getting sewing projects done, even if not as fast as I hoped. I have plans for gifts, and do have a good start on what I need to do. I have cookie dough in the freezer. I have most of the things printed that I wanted to get done (ran out of ink, so haven't finished printing cards ... but can't find my address book anyway).
This weekend was to be the last of the "major" cleaning projects, finishing the kitchen. And friends were to come Saturday night for dinner (a great impetus towards getting done!).
But everything changed. The husband of the couple we expected died suddenly this week. And I am re-examining everything. I am sad because I knew him. I am very sad for my good friend. And I am also (very selfishly, I admit, but can't help) sad because they were they only friends who ever came to visit us. (I have one girlfriend who comes often .. but she's not only seen my house at it's worst, she's helped me clean it; and mostly we do stuff that makes a bigger mess!!). I realize just how much I was counting on having the house look nice for their visit. I know perfectly well they wouldn't care (they've sure been over when things were NOT at their best!!!) ... but I care. Now I find myself roaming through my clean and neat house, and not enjoying it. Because a house without people is just a building. My friends live an hour away, and it's been hard to find a good time to get together. Plus, my house has inadequat a/c, so during the hot summer was not a good time! My family all lives "somewhere else" and are all too busy and too far away to visit. I do have one niece that visits ... but she only wants to watch TV and nap on the sofa! LOL! Oh, and eat. LOL! (and I usually have to go get her anyway).
I've come too far to quit now, so I will finish up the plan. And I will decorate because I enjoy it so much. But somehow, this year, without someone to share it with ... the lights seem a little bit dimmer.

Week Twelve September 2009
I'll admit I'm getting a bit sloppy/lazy/exhausted (take your pick!). But, still, the end result is the ultimate goal. And the end result is a house that is uncluttered and reasonably clean to decorate for Christmas; AND to have all projects done so that by December the only things left to do are bake cookies (from dough already in the freezer; many for gifts); hand out some special things I've already made; shop for the grands (because that's the most fun!); and just enjoy!
The house part I think will get done, although perhaps not in as much "detail" as I originally hoped. Last weekend was for the den. Jimmy did go through a huge pile of stuff he had stacked up by his chair. There's still a pile there, just not *quite* as big. I've decided that when I have company (not that I actually ever do) I'll just throw a quilt over the pile. All the other areas got decluttered; and I got most of the dusting done (tedious, there's a collection of boat models with tiny fragile parts). Except for vacuuming, the den actually is fairly decent now. Next weekend is the kitchen; but my friend cleaned the microwave for me (we moved it, and she even climbed up on the counter, where I can't, and cleaned behind it). I've been working on "hot spots" as I go along, so the main thing I'll need to do will be clean out 2 refrigerators (YUCK!!) and clean the floor (more YUCK!!)
I thought we were going to have company Saturday night ... a great incentive to finish! LOL! But, it looks like that may not happen. Since I can't be sure, I'm going to act as if they are coming and aim for getting the fridges done, the kitchen floor done, dust and vac the whole house, and clean the bathrooms. If I don't get hung up on the computer, I can easily do all that. Well, I think I can.
My sewing goals I'm not doing so well with. I really wanted to make some significant progress on 2 quilts that are way overdue. I've made progress, but not as much as I wanted. I had to put them aside, though, for other projects. One project (not saying what - I don't think anyone is reading this, based on the fact that when I ask for comments/feedback I get NONE) is nearly done, and needs to be mailed soon. Another project I need to have finished in less than a month. Also, I need to (re)hem a robe for Mama, so also have less than a month to finish that. I have some projects I started last year and never finished. They would make nice gifts, if I can get them finished.
Then there's the craft projects. I don't have as many of those. Mostly, I'm wanting to make fake "candy" to decorate outside. We plan to do that the first weekend in October, which isn't very far off. So, I don't know how much of the crafts will get done; but if we get things made later, they can always be added. I just want the "main" part of the outside stuff done before it gets too cold to work on it (like we did last year!).
There's also baking projects I need to be more current on. I do have cookie dough in the freezer ... 4 batches. I think I need a lot more! I'd like to try to get some different kinds made (right now it's just sugar cookies); but some of my favorites I'm not sure would freeze well (the dough I mean. I guess I should find time to go ahead and make cookies and freeze!) Also, I need to make some bread. That would be nice along with the cookies for gifts; and if I can just go ahead and get some made, it will freeze well too.
Hopefully I'll be able to get more productive in the evenings as my deadlines loom closer!

Week Twelve (half) September 2009
Depending on your definition of "done", I am. LOL!! OK, by the (revised) schedule I'm going by, this weekend is for cleaning the den. Much to my surprise, it got done. All the clutter got removed except the pile by DH's chair. I give up on that ... will just throw a quilt over it all when anyone comes here. I do have to dust and vacuum, and that will get done tomorrow. I will also get started on the kitchen tomorrow.
Also today 2 more batches of cookie dough got put in the freezer. My friend and my niece did that while I worked on the den. This was after a half day of shopping, which happened after a morning of getting "routine" things done, plus after finishing getting things from the porch moved to the barn and the last little bit of "stuff" relocated. And, we watched 2 movies (The Secret Life of Bees, on TV, and then Dirty Dancing, on DVD), and a NCIS marathon.
It was a GOOD day! :) The shopping excursion was successful. We found a solution to a problem with creating some fake candy for decorating outside ... plastic tablecloths!! (much cheaper to use that to cover paper plates than to use red plastic plates!) Hopefully tomorrow afternoon we'll get busy and put a bunch of decorations together ... maybe even make some cookies for now!

Midweek update
It's now half way through September, and there is still so much to do! Not on the cleaning part - I have a good handle on that. But everything else needs work.
There won't be a lot of sewing gifts, but I do have a few things started that I need to finish. I have 2 quilts that are overdue that I really wanted to get done, but doesn't look like that will happen. I did get a set of napkins hemmed, and a set of placemats quilted (need hemming now) last night. I also have several pillowcases I need to make.
Other than the sewing, I have an Advent calendar to finish (oh, and I have to remember to post a few more days to my Advent group too!). I have to acquire some Advent gifts, a few small items for work, some glass containers (flea market!!).
I also need to get more cookie dough into the freezer. If I can find time, getting some cookies in there would be good too!
I have some plans for outside, but it's fast approaching time to put that stuff up (before it gets too cold to deal with it) ... and things aren't made yet.
I really need to find me some inspiration ... and energy!!! :)

Gift Idea
This is a very inexpensive gift, parts of it a bit time consuming.
First, you have to pick out some encouraging Bible verses. There are hundreds ... I picked 3 dozen. Type them up on a business card (or something similar) size format. I printed about 24 to a page ... it's up to you, make them larger if you want. I printed 2 or 3 pages of each verse ... which gives me 24 "sets" of verses (times however many pages you print). This takes a bit of time; and then each verse needs to be cut out. If you have a paper cutter (I don't) it would go much faster! LOL!
All of that is the hard part. Take one set of slips of paper with verses, and fold up each piece of paper. Mix the pieces of paper together with enough peppermints to fill the container you use. I used a pretty glass vase from a Dollar store, but plan to search flea markets for more.
Present the vase of mints and folded slips of paper (with a pretty bow), with a card telling your recipient than when they feel "down", reach for "encourage-mints".

Week Elevan September 2009
Much to my surprise, I did finish my scheduled chore for this week. I got busy this morning and tackled the back hall. Once I took the clutter out (2 boxes and a bag full of items to donate), and a few trash things out, it wasn't bad at all. I got everything cleaned, swept, and mopped.
I also managed to wipe down the front bathroom real good. I threw a load of towels (I hate damp towels "laying around") in the washer, put them in the dryer tonight; tomorrow I'll get them put away and do another regular load of laundry.
We spent most of the day going down to bail out Jimmy's boat. Because there was a storm off the coast last weekend, it took nearly a full hour to bail it out (usually take 20 to 30 minutes). We did get to visit our son & family a bit, that was good.
I have a lot of projects that are not getting done, that I should be accomplishing simultaneously with the cleaning, and it's not happening. Much as I want my 2 main projects done, I'm thinking I better put those aside and finish ones that I actually need for Christmas. I have an Advent calendar to finish, several table toppers, and one other sewing project. I also need a LOT more cookie dough in the freezer, since it looks like baking will be the bulk of my gifting this year.
I have a lot of Christmas cards printed (ok, I'm "cheating" ... printing on plain paper instead of "good" paper ... that's just what the budget will bear this year). I'm out of color ink, so don't know if I'll get any more done or not. At least I did get all the other printing projects done that I wanted to use this year. I have some assembly to do .... better get that on my schedule! Oh, and I really need a trip to that great Flea Market in Smithfield for some interesting (and cheap) glass jars and/or candy dishes.
It's been a long day, and it's really late, so better quit "thinking with my fingers" for tonight.
My plan for this week is: update my calendar to include when projects need to be completed; keep laundry caught up; make at least one batch (preferably 2 batches) of cookie dough for the freezer; hem a set of napkins; sandwich & pin a set of placemats; trace the quilting pattern on at least 5 blocks; do the cutting for the next phase of a project; dust and vacuum all the "done" rooms.

Nearly Week Eleven, September 2009
I know, that doesn't make sense! LOL! Here's the thing: this weekend is scheduled to clean the back hall, which includes the back bathroom (very small) and the laundry room (not so small), as well as the hall. I'm not including the closets; they were done 2 years ago, and will get re-done over next winter. However -- and I knew this could possibly be an issue -- it is hot! And that part of the house has no a/c. I can open the back door, and one window in the bathroom. Also, today was a running errands day. We did several errands that involved running to 2 different towns, then I had to unload and put up groceries. Later, we had to go out again in a different direction. We got a bite to eat while out, and I had to come home and put up a few more groceries. In case you haven't guessed by now ... the back hall hasn't been done yet. :( I am, however, managing to stick to a resolve to get up in the morning (though NOT as early as a work day), clean the kitchen, get laundry started, and as soon as laundry is in the dryer get a shower (as opposed to staying in PJs all day! LOL!) I have all of my outfits picked out for next week, plus underwear and earrings ... so no decision making in the mornings. All laundry has been put away (that's a biggie for me!).
I'm really hoping to get busy on that back area in the morning, before the day heats up so much. I've already removed a good bit of the clutter. The back bathroom has been the collecting point for things to donate ... I can move them to the van in the yard. (can't drive it, but a good place to store the stuff until I've got everything together). Once I move the rest of the clutter, it's a matter of wiping down everything good, and sweeping and mopping. Jimmy wants me (and Andrea?) to ride with him down to bail out his boat tomorrow afternoon (that's about 2 1/2 hours each way). I hate to say no ... he's a pretty good sport about always going for a weekend with my family whenever we get a chance. But it's a boring trip! LOL! Still, we'll probably go ... but I need to try to get as much of this week's project done as possible first.
My eventual goal ... in addition, of course, to the Christmas decorating ... is that any one could drop by my house at any time and I won't be embarrassed. I'm NOT there yet (of course, no one ever "drops by" my house either ... but hope springs eternal, right? LOL!). Another phase of my goal is to have other projects done (including the previously done cookie dough) by Thanksgiving, so that December can be relaxed and fun. I've got an Advent project printed, and finances being tight I think there won't be anything else with that this year. I have a gift I can use for my co-workers all printed, just need one inespensive item to go with it (plenty of time for that still). I've been printing Christmas cards, but have run out of ink so that will have to wait to get finished. I may not need any more if I can't find my address book! LOL!! The one area I'm not doing well on is the sewing. I love putting together quilts. I don't love the cutting and sandwiching and other bits that have to be done. Actually, the projects I'm working on aren't really Christmas gifts ... they're just way overdue and I want them finished!!
Tonight, while deciding if I needed to post an update when I haven't done anything, I was looking over past posts ... and realized I had comments! I can't tell you how much that means ... even if only one person is reading, it's so encouraging. So, I'm asking a favor .... anyone that reads this .... please just leave a quick comment, so I'll know if there is more than one person out there?
If we get home in time tomorrow night, I'll post whether or not I got the back hall done. (if not, I'll have to do it along with the den next weekend!).

Week Ten, September 2009
I have to keep this short, as I don't have much time this morning, but needed to post an update. Not that anyone is reading; but to keep myself on track.
I had re-arranged my schedule a bit. The weather has turned very nice, fall is on the way if not already here. Saturday and Sunday were in the 80s instead of 90s, so good outside days. I got (with a lot of help!) the porch cleaned. There's still one little section to work on, but I'm not as concerned with that at the moment. The more visible area looks WAY better. We found new homes for much of the junk, and re-organized what had to stay. We also destroyed about 7 or 8 wasp nests!! Yikes!! (I'm allergic!).
Yesterday, my "bonus" day (Labor Day), my friend came over and we got 4 batches of sugar cookie dough made. Now we each have 2 in the freezer ready to thaw, roll, and bake in December. This was such an easy way to do it, I believe we'll get more done later. We also made up one batch of "cake mix cookies" and baked ... yumm!!
I still have things to go back and re-do in all areas; but for the most part, except for the sewing, I'm on track.

Week Nine, August 2009
Last weekend did not go *quite* like I expected; but I did get done the main thing on my schedule done. I have tweaked it a bit, re-arranging what I want to get done when. The best thing at this point is knowing that I have (finally) got a schedule reasonably flexible enough to handle the unexpected!
Saturday was a gray, off-and-on rainy day. There are a lot of things around the house that I probably should have done. But I just didn't. Instead I got all my fall decorations out, and the summer stuff packed away. I also baked a batch of cookies for no special reason. Now, realistically, my schedule has included getting cookie dough made and in the freezer. It hasn't happened. I'm supposed to be much farther along on sewing projects. And, I should be keeping up with routine cleaning in all the areas I've already done. Well, that part I'm somewhat doing, but could stand to be better.
Saturday night we got an unexpected call to go to our son's house (2 hours away). All is well there now, but we weren't sure what was up until we were almost there. So, we got a short visit with them all, plus Jimmy got to go pump out his boat. That just meant that Sunday was a wash as far as getting anything else done at home.
The weather is co-operating nicely. I saved the jobs in the "hotter" areas for cooler weather. September can be as hot as August in NC. So far, though, it's starting out lovely, and this whole week is predicted to be "normal". Next weekend my target is the porch. I have a 3 day weekend to get it done - although I hope to reserve Monday for a cookie-dough making party with a friend.
I hope during this week to find an extra reserve of energy somewhere and get a few small jobs caught up.
